In Celebration, FL
Gracie Barra Celebration doesn't teach Judo — but BJJ and Judo grew from the same root, and many of our 200+ students came to us from a Judo background and found their skills transferred immediately.
Two Branches of the Same Tree
Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu both descend from traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu — they are siblings, not strangers. Mitsuyo Maeda, a Judo master and student of Kano's Kodokan, brought his art to Brazil where the Gracie family adapted it into what we now know as BJJ. The throws, grips, and positional concepts overlap significantly. The divergence is in what happens after the takedown.
In competitive Judo, a clean throw can end the match. In BJJ, the throw is the opening move — a gateway to guard passing, positional dominance, and the submission game that makes BJJ the most complete ground-fighting art in existence. Judo players who transition to BJJ at Gracie Barra Celebration consistently impress on day one because their takedown ability gives them an immediate advantage over pure BJJ players.
Professor Rodrigo Frezza and the GB Celebration coaching team appreciate and incorporate throwing technique into both Gi and No-Gi classes. If you have a Judo background, you won't be asked to abandon your throwing game — you'll be shown how to weaponize it even further by connecting it to the submission chains and positional control that BJJ specializes in.
What BJJ Offers Judo Players
