What Is the Panther Kids Tournament?
Panther Kids is a youth-only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament series that runs across Florida throughout the year. Unlike adult-focused tournaments where kids divisions feel like a side event, Panther Kids is built end-to-end for young grapplers. Expect age divisions starting around age 4, separate Gi and No-Gi brackets, weight categories tight enough that matches are competitive, and an emphasis on participation medals so first-timers leave with a positive experience.

How the Divisions Work
Panther Kids tournaments organize competitors by three factors so matches are fair:
- Age: Typically grouped in 1- to 2-year bands (e.g., 4–5, 6–7, 8–9, 10–11, 12–13). Your child's age on the day of competition determines the division.
- Belt or experience level: White belts, gray/yellow/orange belts, and green belts are usually separated so a child with one stripe isn't matched against a green belt with two years of tournament experience.
- Weight: Within each age + belt division, kids are split into weight categories. Expect to be weighed in the morning of the tournament — bring a small snack for after weigh-ins so your kid isn't running on empty.
What to Expect on Tournament Day
Most kids tournaments follow a similar rhythm:
- Arrive 60–90 minutes before your division. You'll check in, weigh in, and get your wristband.
- Warm up with your team. Coaches lead a light dynamic warm-up around 30 minutes before the first match.
- Matches are short. Kids divisions usually run 2- to 4-minute matches depending on age.
- Brackets run quickly. Once your division starts, expect your child's matches to come back-to-back within an hour.
- Stay through medals. Whether your kid wins, places, or loses early, the team gathers at the end for medals, photos, and group support.

Our competition team at Gracie Barra Celebration includes kids who travel to Panther Kids and other Florida youth tournaments. We don't push every kid to compete — competition is optional. But for those who want it, here's what training looks like:
- Regular kids BJJ classes (3–5 days per week) build the foundation: technique, drilling, light positional sparring.
- Weekly competition class adds tournament-specific rules training: stalling penalties, advantages, points scoring, and how to handle a referee.
- Mock tournaments in the academy let kids experience the bracket format with friends before stepping onto a real mat.
- Strength and conditioning appropriate for kids — mostly bodyweight movement, agility games, and core work.

How old does my child need to be to compete?
Most Panther Kids tournaments accept competitors starting at age 4. At Gracie Barra Celebration, we typically wait until a child has 6–12 months of consistent training under their belt before recommending their first tournament — but every child is different. Talk to your child's coach.
Is it safe?
Kids BJJ competition is one of the safer combat sport formats. There are no strikes, no slams allowed in lower belts, and referees stop matches the moment a position becomes risky. Most injuries at this level are minor — a bumped lip or a tweaked finger. Coaches and parents stay matside throughout matches.
What does my kid need to bring?
A clean Gi (white or blue), a competition mouthguard, water, a healthy snack for after weigh-ins, and their belt. If your kid competes in No-Gi divisions, also bring a fitted rash guard and athletic shorts without pockets, zippers, or strings.
What if my child loses their first match?
This is the most important question. The first tournament is rarely about winning — it's about doing the thing. Kids who lose their first match and stay engaged tend to develop the strongest long-term mindset. Talk to them beforehand about the goal being effort, not results. Coaches and teammates will reinforce this.
